Assault Rifles

I would just like to point out that the word "assault" is defined as a crime of violence against another person, and does not have anything to do with the actual piece of equipment designated as an "assault rifle". The way this has been phrased attempts to illustrate that every time you use one you are "assaulting" someone/something. One can use these rifles for any number of reasons, none of which necessitates the use of "assault".

If someone happens to use a car to intentionally run someone over, should we now call all cars "assault vehicles"? If one uses a knife to murder someone, should we then call them "assault blades"?

In my opinion, any rifle, from a single shot .22 to a full auto AK, that is used to assault someone is an "assault rifle", and all others are just plain "rifles".

Re: Assault Rifles

Definition

The term assault rifle is a translation of the German word Sturmgewehr (literally meaning "storm rifle"), "storm" used as a verb being synonymous with assault, as in "to storm the compound".

Sturmgewehr was coined by Adolf Hitler[1] to describe the Maschinenpistole 44, subsequently re-christened Sturmgewehr 44, the firearm generally considered the first true assault rifle that served to popularize the concept.

The translation assault rifle gradually became the common term for similar firearms sharing the same technical definition as the StG 44. In a strict definition, a firearm must have at least the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:
  • It must be an individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder;
  • It must be capable of selective fire;
  • It must have an intermediate-power cartridge between pistol and traditional rifle;
  • Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable box magazine.
The term "assault rifle" is often more loosely to include other types of arms, particularly arms that fall under a strict definition of the battle rifle, or semi-automatic variant of military rifles for commercial or political reasons.

The US Army defines assault rifles as "short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachinegun and rifle cartridges".

In my opinion it's another CONSPIRACY to use our language associations to scare ignorant people. This is how the mind-masters work, but many deny any "conspiracy theories" here at GIM, so ... forget what I think.

A fine collector's rifle ... It's my understanding that Kalishnikov had the Stg44's in mind when he designed the AKM 1947. In fact he was perhaps wounded by one, as I recall ...

"When you absolutely positively got to kill every MF in the room... there's nothing like an Stg44. Accept no substitutes."

Crap.......there are Semi-Auto versions made in Germany but not importable. :s10: Thanks to BATFE ........:rant:

The BATFE Firearms Technology Branch has determined that the BD44 German semi-auto MP44 is NOT importable. So freedom and the 2nd Amendment is denied American military rifle collectors and reenactors again.

I'd like to get a STG 44 with the Vampir night vision scope with it (the Germans created night vision in the later years of WWII).
